Shield H Farms has been raising Black Angus cattle, registered American Quarter Horses, and premium alfalfa hay since 1981. We grow high-quality alfalfa and alfalfa/grass hay while responsibly raising cattle and horses, guided by sustainable practices, animal well-being, and long-term land stewardship – all with a commitment to hard work, integrity, and rural values.
Shield H Farms is a working farm and ranch consisting of several hundred acres located in the Riverton, Wyoming area.
We raise registered American Quarter Horses, Black Angus cattle, and premium alfalfa hay. Headquartered just 7.5 miles north of Riverton, Wyoming, we are nestled close to the Wyoming Heritage Trail and the beautiful Wind River.
Our reining-bred and ranch horses have sold to clients from Canada to Mexico, coast to coast, and everywhere in between! Our cattle operation also keeps us busy, with most of our calf crop being sold through the Riverton Livestock Auction each fall. We hand select a number of outstanding replacement heifers each year to retain the good genetics, disposition, and conformation we appreciate with the Black Angus breed. The spring, summer, and fall months have us working the hay fields, harvesting quality alfalfa and grass/alfalfa hay which is also sold throughout the United States.
Our Horses
Our horses are raised in open country and learn to handle themselves in the real world. Our ranch horse and show horse prospects are raised in the open country where they drink from live water, are exposed to wildlife, dogs, cattle, traffic, ATV's, and learn to handle themselves in the real world. Our foals are home raised and trained to ensure a solid partner for our clients. Several of our prospects have gone on to prove themselves in the competitive roping, reining, ranch riding, and even halter classes in local open shows, county and state fair shows, and the larger AQHA, NRHA, USTRC, and NRCHA shows.

Buyers often purchase our prospects with the goal of training and developing them into competitive, reliable performance horses. They are great-minded, easy to handle, and fun to train!

Good Times Too, a 2012 red roan stallion by One Time Pepto and out of Cats Good Intentions, by High Brow Cat. We breed our ranch mares and we accept a number of outside mares.

Our ranch-bred horses are trained and ridden for versatile, practical work. Our reining-bred horses are selected based on prominent, established, and well-known pedigrees.

The goal of this training is to prepare them physically and mentally for their future careers, often focusing on developing confidence, ground manners, and basic riding skills.

PERFORMANCE
Our Horses are Fun to Train!
We believe that good, responsive ranch-bred horses have the ability to have successful performance show careers, regardless of their breeding.
Our performance bred horses can take you to ropings, reinings, cuttings, team-pennings, working cowhorse events, ranch horse versatility classes, the trails, the ranch and will be great all-around mounts... dependent only on how you want to finish them! They are great-minded, easy to handle, fun to train, and fantastic partners who will hold up to your program. We also know how much fun it is to ride a pretty horse so we have colors for everyone! Good conformation and incredible minds are our #1 priority with our program.
FIRST CLASS BREEDING CERTIFICATION
AQHA
Shield H Quarter Horses is also an American Quarter Horse Association Ranching Heritage Breeder, which means our horses can be enrolled and shown in the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge events.
AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders embody the longevity, integrity and honesty of the ranching tradition. Ranching Heritage Breeders breed and raise the ranch-type horse, which remains at the core of the American Quarter Horse Association and epitomizes the breed’s versatility.
Shield H Quarter Horses was recognized as a finalist for the inaugural Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year Award in 2016. As lifetime members of the AQHA and being nominated by our peers who represent more than 300 Ranching Heritage Breeders who are the life-blood of the American Quarter Horse industry, we found this to be an outstanding achievement!

Quality hay, grown with care
Farming
Shield H Farms is primarily in alfalfa production with rotating crops of corn and oats. The farm has one computerized controlled center pivot irrigation system at the Paradise Valley property while the other tracts are irrigated via dams and gated pipe to ensure good, consistent coverage for the alfalfa, grass/alfalfa, row crops, and pasture ground. Three cuttings each summer are the result of our irrigation systems that supply sufficient water, annual fertilization practices, and conscientious insecticide applications. The arid climate with cool evenings, warm days, low humidity, and high altitude of 4,951 feet maximizes the quality of our alfalfa. Shield H Farms offers alfalfa hay for sale year round.
We are located in the Wind River Basin, north of Riverton, Wyoming and have easy access from U.S. Highway 26/Wyoming Highway 789. Our stack yards are designed with our drivers in mind to accommodate large tractor-trailers for easy loading and shipping. We can also fill hay orders for the smaller loads as well. Shield H Farms produces over 4,000 tons of alfalfa and grass/alfalfa hay each year and have shipped hay to states from coast to coast and border to border.

What people are saying
Our new horse loaded nicely in a trailer not his own, he crossed bridges, walked through water, ponied my extra horse, rode behind, and took the lead. He basically did everything that was asked of him with a calm spirit and good attitude. Good job Peggy!

Debbie Kister, What State
Shield H Farms does a beautiful job of raising all of their horses. From the day I tried him, I knew he was something special and had loads of potential. He’s never proved me wrong—the talent, willingness, bravery, and beauty he has is incredible.

John Faber, Wyoming
I could not be more pleased with my new yearling horse. She has a wonderful personality, manners, and is a wonderful fit for us. She is everything they said she was and I am blessed to call her ours. Thank you Shield H Farms! We will be back again.
